Newhaven is a channel ferry port in East Sussex in England with regular passenger services to Dieppe. It lies at the mouth of the River Ouse between the sea and the South Downs National Park. Newhaven has a unique identity – one which has a juxtaposition between the coastline, marine, countryside, industry and creative designer-makers and artists. It is a place where the people take pride in their town heritage and it has a strong local culture.
As part of Lewes District Councils successful bid for the Government's Future High Streets Fund to help transform the town centre and its environs, I was asked to explore, develop and design a wayfaring scheme that would be complementary and authentic to the nature and persona of Newhaven. This design direction has been adopted by Avis Way, which has highlighted the district and given the people and companies that work there places to gather, socialise and take the opportunity the be outside.
