Sometimes a project offers more than just a surface to design upon; it becomes a living canvas for a town’s imagination. That was certainly the case at Waterloo Square in Bognor Regis, where a vibrant new hoarding transformed an ordinary boundary into a burst of colour, story, and local pride. Commissioned as an extension of the Bognor Regis Wayfinding Project, the work brought bright, iconic graphics and clear directional design together in one dynamic sweep across the square.
At the heart of the original project there was a year-long community collaboration. We hosted drop-ins, pop-ups at music and sports events, and creative sessions with local groups including Age UK and Voluntary Action Arun & Chichester. Over 200 residents – from ages 4 to 87 – contributed their own patterns and symbols, working to a shared geometric template and colour palette. Some designs stood proudly alone; others interwove into collective themes.
The result: a joyful celebration by Bognor Regis, for Bognor Regis; a public artwork that reflects the town’s colour, character, and community spirit.
