Bognor Regis is a vibrant coastal town in southeast England – known for its seaside charm, lively pedestrianised centre, and strong community spirit. To support its regeneration and celebrate its bold personality, I was commissioned to develop a town-wide wayfinding strategy in partnership with the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board, the Business Improvement District, local councils,
the University, and local businesses.
The strategy identified key pedestrian routes connecting major attractions, supported by a design approach that reflected Bognor’s cultural energy and seaside heritage. The resulting scheme features a bold, colourful palette, clear signage using both formal and colloquial language, and place-specific interpretation panels. A series of geometric artworks – rooted in Bognor Regis’s identity and co-created with the community – were embedded throughout the town, transforming wayfinding into a vibrant expression of place.
At the heart of the project was an extensive year-long community engagement programme. We ran town centre drop-ins, pop-up events at music and sports venues, and focused sessions with local groups including AgeUK and Voluntary Action Arun & Chichester. Residents of all ages – from 4 to 87 –contributed over 200 individual designs to a shared geometric template and colour scheme. Some stood alone; others were blended into collective themes. It was a scheme by Bognor Regis, for Bognor Regis.
To minimise disruption and maximise value, the project repurposed existing infrastructure – retrofitting and wrapping current wayfinding totems, enhancing street furniture and seating, and updating display boards (while preserving the original ‘Welcome to BOGNOR REGIS’ panel for posterity). A playful breadcrumb trail of lamp-post collars further guides movement through the town.
Robust materials were chosen for durability, low maintenance, and resilience against the coastal climate and potential anti-social behaviour – ensuring long-term impact with minimal future cost.
This project delivered more than effective navigation. It created a cohesive visual identity, improved connectivity, and encouraged active travel – while celebrating local stories and fostering community pride. Through public art and collaborative design, the strategy brings warmth, welcome, and a renewed sense of place to Bognor Regis.
