Located on London Road, Brighton, the historic Open Market underwent a major redevelopment in 2014 and is now home to over 50 local producers and creators.
With a strong focus on fresh nutritious foods and ethical products, the market has a range of traditional market stalls—butcher, fishmonger, eggs, fruit and veg—as well as cafes, art, crafts, fashions, antiques, haberdashery, tools, garden goods and more.
Our task was to create a new identity and brand for the market along with appropriate signage elements that were sympathetic to the ethos of the development.
The solution to create a robust flexible identity and super-graphic designs painted directly onto the brick walls which ‘echo’ traditional signage techniques from the past in a contemporary context. Also a set of unit numbers for the gallery studios.
A colourful solution to reflect the diverse nature of the market.
The Open Market has been recently shortlisted for a Placemaking Award in the category of mixed use development. The award will be given to the best mixed-use project that most clearly demonstrates a potential or actual positive impact, on the physical or environmental quality of a place or the economic or social well-being of community.
